2011 One Book, One Community

There are many free events in the Detroit area this month revolving around the book “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”, this year’s One Book, One Community selection.   This year’s partners are the Detroit Public Library, The American Cancer Society, Wayne State University, Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, HAP, Wayne County Community College District and the Detroit Science Center.

Stop by the Cancer Awareness Health Fair on Wednesday March 16 from 2 to 6 PM at WCCCD’s Northwest Campus Welcome Center, 8200 W. Outer Drive, Detroit.

Attend “What Have We Learned: A Candid Community Conversation” sponsored by the American Cancer Society on Thursday March 24th at 6:30 PM at Detroit Public Library’s Main Branch.  This community-wide panel discussion will focus on key topics covered in the book, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”, including the critical health issues facing our community, evolution of research ethics and progress, and the resources available to help patients and families navigate a potential health crisis.

Hear author Rebecca Skloot discuss “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” on Saturday March 26th at 2 PM in the Friends Auditorium of Detroit Public Library’s Main Branch.  This event is free and open to the public.  A book signing will follow.
